Meetings with many people

Video calls, screen sharing and chat, hosted in France, with no account at a third party.

How it works

In a small meeting, each participant sends their video directly to everyone else. This works well up to 4 to 6 people; beyond that, everyone's computer and connection become overloaded.

For larger meetings, Omnifloo uses a meeting server: everyone sends their video only once, and the server redistributes it to the others.

How many participants?

With the meeting server: in the order of 10 to 15 people with their camera on, and more if most only use their microphone or just listen. These are orders of magnitude, not guarantees: they have not yet been measured in real conditions.

The limiting factor is bandwidth: each camera that is on uses about 1 Mbit/s to send, and as much again for each person receiving it. A meeting with 12 cameras therefore needs a good connection for every participant.

As long as the meeting server is not enabled on your workspace, video calls work like a small meeting (4 to 6 people). If it is temporarily unavailable, calls may fail until it is restored.

What is included

  • Video and audio calls
  • Screen sharing
  • Written chat during the meeting
  • Invitation by link, including for outside guests

What is not offered for now

  • Webinars for several hundred people
  • Meeting recording
  • Automatic subtitles and transcription
  • Dialling in from a landline or mobile phone, without internet

Preparing a large meeting

  1. Ask everyone to use an up-to-date browser and a headset, to avoid echo.
  2. Have people who do not need to be seen turn their camera off: it is the setting that improves quality the most.
  3. Before an important meeting, run a five-minute test with participants connected from different networks.
  4. On a heavily filtered company network that blocks real-time communications, the video may be degraded or fail to connect: use another network (for example 4G) or ask your IT department to allow access to the meeting server.

Frequently asked questions

Do my meetings go through an American service?

No. The meeting server is hosted in France and uses no outside video conferencing service.

Are my meetings recorded?

No. Nothing is recorded: the server only relays the live video.

Why 10 to 15 people, and not 100?

Because we prefer to announce what we know we can deliver. Every camera that is on must be redistributed to everyone else, which takes a lot of bandwidth: beyond about fifteen cameras, quality would drop for everyone.
